Description
Do you want to know precisely where students are phonics wise? As a reading interventionist, I always need to know where my students are performing. I have to know where to start and prove how much progress we have made. I created these phonics assessments to do just that!
These are designed for students in first grade and above to determine where students are reading phonetically.
It also includes segmenting and blending on the first grade one as those are the two most important phonemic awareness skills and assessing those quickly will give you valuable information about your students.
This resource includes:
✚ two different phonics decoding screeners (one geared towards the beginning of 1st)
✚ Directions
✚ Phonics Screener Master (for students)
✚ Scorning Guides
✚ Scorning Sheets
These phonics assessments can help you, especially with determining where to start your Small Group Reading Intervention phonics for older students to find activities that are just right interventions to help them catch up.
A phonics based sound spelling assessment is a useful placement and progress monitoring tool. Encoding or spelling of words is the most reliable way to see if your students have mastered phonics concepts. When reporting progress they also provide solid evidence.
The sound spelling includes 3 inventories:
- Kindergarten – letter sounds only
- First Grade – cvc words, digraphs, magic e, ar & or R controlled vowels, most common long vowel teams, open syllables, tricky y, and 2 syllable closed.
- Second Grade – review of 1st grade concepts but multisyllable, in addition to vowel teams, trigraphs, wild old words, prefixes, schwa, and 3 syllable
This can be given 3 or 4 times a year. I did include an option for twice a year for Kindergarten.
There are also data sheets to track class progress.
As well as symbol pictures to aid in administering in K/1. Along with tips for administering.
If you aren’t familiar with phonics screeners, they are “diagnostic assessments that quickly and accurately identify individual students' strengths and instructional needs in phonics and/or decoding." This untimed assessment can be repeated periodically to monitor student progress in learning to decode. - Read Naturally
