    Description

This holiday bundle includes four engaging activities for the holidays Hallowe’en, Winter, Valentine’s Day, and the Spring holiday.

The activities are all NGSS aligned.

Autopsy Lab: An Introduction to Dissection Using CER

This is the perfect activity for Hallowe’en

Have fun and engage your students with this  lesson (Google and PDF versions) which serves as an introduction to dissection that will have your students in full participation mode!

The lesson will allow students to practice with identification and safe handling of dissection tools, as well as acquainting them with anatomical terms of the body and anatomical directions.  This is accomplished in a fun forensic style lab where students investigate a comical crime scene involving pickle specimens.   They act out the scene as forensic pathologists to unravel the murder mystery.  It is also possible to do this as a dissection practice without the crime scene or forensics.

Winter holiday parachuting STEM project MS ETS1-2 MS ETS1-4 5-PS2-1

This highly engaging engineering and design project (GOOGLE and PDF versions) allows students to gain a greater understanding of how a parachute works to slow down an object.

Students design, construct, and test their design for a parachute (using simple materials). Their parachutist is represented by a winter holiday character. Students can draw their character or use one of the characters included in the teacher notes. After initial testing, students have the chance to redesign their parachute to make it more effective.

A written formative assessment is included which allows for students to critique their design and offer ideas for improvements.

    Exploring "Nose-stalgia" A sensory Lab for Valentine's holiday!: MS-LS1-8

Have fun with this exploration of the sensory stimuli of smell!

This ``Nose-stalgia”  lesson (Google and PDF versions) serves as an exploration of the sense of smell and how some scents can have a strong association with certain memories and emotions. These associations are especially vivid when their connections are to a pleasant or well loved place, event or person. This is the tie in to Valentines Day, a unique celebration of love all around the world!

Smells can evoke these sweet memories and feelings of love!  Students will explore this power of scent!

Spring Holiday Edible Car STEM project MS ETS1-2 MS ETS1-4

This highly engaging project  (GOOGLE and PDF versions) has students use the design process to build a fast edible car that can transport chocolate down a hill.

This project can be used as a spring holiday activity but it can also function as a good introduction to a force and motion unit where students can take measurements and calculate the speed of their cars.

Students design, construct, and test their design for an edible car (using simple materials). After initial testing, students have the chance to redesign their car to make it faster.

Included in all these lessons are google slides for presentation to the class, a detailed teacher booklet with full instructions and student handouts with the information needed for all the investigations.

    Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
    NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
    NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
    NGSS5-PS2-1
Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down. “Down” is a local description of the direction that points toward the center of the spherical Earth. Assessment does not include mathematical representation of gravitational force.
    NGSSMS-LS1-8
Gather and synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories. Assessment does not include mechanisms for the transmission of this information.
