Science Cafe. Physical or Chemical Change. Food Science Project. Print and Go
Description
Opportunities to learn about STEM are all around us. Food science is an important job that not many people even know exists. What do food scientists do? What are they looking to achieve?
In this lesson, students demonstrate their understanding of physical and chemical changes AND examine jobs in STEM. Students learn about what food scientists do (video links and worksheet) and then create a menu for a science cafe (indicating what types of changes they see).
This project directly covers 3 expectations of the new Grade 5 science curriculum. A rubric is included for easy grading. It is print and go and a full answer key in included.
Suggestions for differentiation are also included. This assignment can also be linked to media literacy by asking students to publish their menu. What are the elements of good menus? How do menus convey information.
I know how busy we are as teachers. When I do this product, I easily get 2 assessments: science and media literacy.
This is a real-world type of task that encourages STEM in an easy to understand manner. This lesson is quick and easy, like a piece of cake (chemical change)!
