Description

Persuasive / Argument Writing now has a fun and authentic purpose! Students will 'apply' for a fictional scholarship to a dream high school. They will write a cover letter in which they convince a scholarship review committee that they are an exceptional student and the perfect candidate for their school.

I have found great success with this writing unit for the past 6 years. Students get to write about what they know best: themselves! They are experts of their own content, which frees them up to focus on the writing structure. This piece utilizes the MEL-Con or TEL-Con structure (Main Idea [Thesis/Topic], Evidence, Link/Explanation, Conclusion).

This unit includes:
* Exciting Prompt Handout
* Common Core State Standards Addressed (Grades 7-10)
* Learning Targets and Essential Questions
* Lesson Plans for 2 weeks
* A Model Letter
* Brainstorming Worksheet
* Outline in TEL-Con format
* Modified Outline in grid format - perfect for students who struggle with organization and the writing process
* 6 Traits Rubric

Many of my students report that this was a life-changing writing project for them. For some, it helped them to get 'geared up' for high school. For others, it helped them to focus their goals and ambitions. Still others report that this letter was a true wake-up call for them, making them realize that they needed to get their life on track in order to reach their dreams and have a fighting chance at getting in to college. Our guidance counselors use these Scholarship letters to help encourage students to join extra-curricular activities, and to schedule their classes based on a student's interests. Parents are HUGE fans of this project as well!
