What educators are saying

I loved this resource. It forced my students to pay attention and they learned a lot from it. They were able to make really good connections when we discussed the connections to The Crucible.
My students almost seemed riveted during this documentary, and the guide provided quality questions to help reinforce the idea that the Salem Witch Trials were strange but true!

Description

This is our resource for viewing the Smithsonian Channel's documentary on the Salem Witch Trials. At the time of this product's posting (2022), it is free to watch on their YouTube channel. Great for including with any study of this time period in early American history or as a seasonal activity during the Halloween season. The documentary episode is 50 minutes in length and is available for free on Smithsonian Channel's YouTube account (entitled, "America’s Hidden Stories: Salem’s Secrets," link also included in our overview).

Students will complete viewing guide questions and discussion questions. The viewing guide questions are detailed, but we've made sure to space them out enough so that it's not too fast for writing down answers. The discussion questions prompt students to reflect on the content they learned in the film and can be done either independently or in small groups. At the end, you can have the whole class share out.

This product includes:

  • Overview (with a link to the documentary)
  • Viewing Guide (answer key included)
  • Discussion Questions (answer key included)

Please note that the subject of the Salem Witch Trials inherently involves some frightening, gruesome, and mature topics. Some content in this documentary, such as mature images from ancient art, reenactments of hangings, girls screaming, etc. may not be appropriate for all audiences.
