Safety Plans for Crisis, Bullying, and Risk of Dangerous Behaviors

Safety planning is an essential tool for school-based mental health professionals like school counselors and school social workers. Too often I see safety plans that are missing essential components, have not thought through all the ways that a dangerous behavior may manifest in the school, or are not accompanied by a comprehensive plan to implement and reassess. When safety plans are not effective, they set the student up to fail and leave the school community open to potential risk. Having safety plans ready to go that have carefully thought through every necessary element so that you can just fill them out when you need them is the best way to ensure that you are creating effective interventions for dangerous behaviors.

Included you will find three safety plans: one for bullying, one for sexualized behaviors, and one for any other behaviors that pose a risk of harm to the school community. Each safety plan comes with diverse options for support and restriction that address all the potential daily activities of a student as well as special activities or events. Staff and specific scheduling are assigned as needed and there are options for various referrals and thematic restrictions or supports based on the student’s specific behavior. Although you can customize the forms as you wish, everything you need is ready to print and go so you can respond immediately and cover any potential liability.
