Finger placement is one of the major hurdles of learning to play a non-fretted string instrument. The problem first manifests itself when students are learning first position, only to come back again when it is time for students to learn how to shift. It is unfortunate that many students never make it past this hurdle and remain in the beginning or intermediate levels of playing a string instrument.
