These three STEM challenges will have your students exploring and creating with a variety of materials.
Bubble Wands STEM Challenge
- Students will be exploring with a bubble solution.
- The Exploration or Imagining stage of the process includes trying to create bubbles in specific ways and learning how to manipulate the bubble solution. The design challenge takes the fun one step further as students create a bubble wand to make the largest or most unusual bubbles they can!
Chromatography STEM Challenge
- Students will be thinking about the many colors that mix together to create new shades.
- Students will experiment with water-soluble markers and filter paper to see the separation of the color mixtures in the marker ink.
- It’s a fun activity with simple supplies and can be extended in many ways.
- A STEAM Project is included!
Catapults STEM Challenge
- Students construct a working catapult using simple and inexpensive supplies.
- After the catapults are built students are challenged to use their devices to complete several tasks.
- The tasks include firing a projectile (pom-pom) at the greatest distance, firing at a target, and firing over an obstacle.
- The catapults are easy to build, easy to modify, and great fun!
- This challenge will take at least two class sessions to complete.
Each challenge includes a scoring rubric and all forms are editable.
Each resource includes:
- Teacher's Guides (7-10 pages) that provide a materials list and then step-by-step procedures to follow to make this a great experience
- pages of Helpful Hints that give ideas of specific things to think about while using this package
- lab sheets; sample answer sheets from students
- photos to help in your use of the challenges
- Extensions that will give you ideas of continuing the activity as a whole class or in your science/math centers.
