    Teacher Reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My first graders LOVE these STEM mats! They are learning so much and enjoying every minute of it! This is their favorite math station. I am blown away by their creativity and critical thinking skills. Thank you!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I have LOVED this resource for my daily STEM rotations. My students love showing me the things they are creating with the mats!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My principal required our morning choice centers this year to be some type of collaborative activity. I really wanted to find something STEM related so as soon as I came across this resource, I realized that it was perfect! I love the fact that I can change out the mats depending on the holiday and/or season to keep the Engineering Station fresh, new, and engaging for my 2nd graders. It was super easy to print the templates out on cardstock, laminate them, add some Legos, and "Voila:" instant, critical-thinking fun!"

    Why use STEM Mats?

STEM Mats are easy to set up. There are hundreds of building challenge possibilities because each mat has design criteria spinners. A student can repeat the STEM mat challenge and end up with a totally different design. Not only does this make it different from other STEM challenges, but they also won't be comparing themselves to others. You don't need to gather recyclables, and when the activity is complete, the students will disassemble the bricks. That means no paper scraps to clean up, and no need to purchase 37,000 rolls of duct tape. You will need to request donations for, borrow, or purchase building bricks, but once you have them they can be reused over and over.

    What materials will I need?

You will need building bricks. That does not mean you need to purchase expensive ones like name brand blocks! I have found asking for donations works very well. You can even see if your local library has a building club and would be willing to lend you a bin of bricks. There are also numerous compatible bricks out there that are not made by the expensive brand. Check Target for deals on these types of bricks. Other than that you will only need paper and simple classroom supplies (pencils, paper clips, erasers, etc.)!

    How can I differentiate these?

If you have advanced learners, you can take these to the next level. Ask your students to count the number of bricks used, or to complete the challenge wish as few bricks as possible. After all, materials cost money! If you have *very* high learners, you can even ask them to figure out how many possible combinations there are in the spinners!

Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
