Everyone seems to have one or two readers who are simply beyond the group. With the Novel STAX Independent Reading Program, you’ll be differentiating instruction today!

Why purchase independent reading guides for your advanced and GATE readers when they can create and share their own? With STAX, your independent study framework is already developed for Common Core Standards, critical thinking, and variety in learning styles. Teachers serve as guides and make sure questions and responses are developed along the proper guidelines in the STAX program. Meanwhile, students work at their own pace—limited only by their own passion for reading and responding.

What are STAX? STAX are simply stacks of questions and task cards . . . but much, much more! STAX is an entire independent reading program for a novel—any novel.

Here is how it works:

1. Students choose a novel according to their reading level and interest.
2. If no STAX have been created for the novel by previous students, then students use the STAX Templates to create new critical thinking questions and creative responses based on the novel they’re reading. Students answer their own questions and complete their own creative tasks. Their questions and responses will be filed away for the next student who reads the novel.
3. If STAX has already been created for a particular novel, students work their way through the STAX questions and responses that have already been written by their classmates. Students then check their own progress by seeing the examples previously generated by other students. Students check-in with the teacher on a regular basis through progress charts and through occasional discussions.
4. Finally, all students choose a final novel project based on differing learning preferences from the Menu of Independent Reading Projects.

Effective differentiation is standards-based and purposeful. STAX covers these key elements. All STAX Templates are based on COMMON CORE STANDARDS and are framed in a creative, thoughtful way which generates interest and reaches the highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy as well as DOK 4.

Teachers save time as students use critical thinking to generate their own questions and responses. It’s independent study at its most independent! Students can never stray too far from purposeful learning because the templates keep them focused on the Common Core Standards.

As students create new STAX for each new novel, your class library of independent reading projects grows quickly! Share STAX with other teachers for their advanced and GATE readers, too, and watch differentiation opportunities expand exponentially.
