Description

This unit is designed for two purposes:

Video Preview of STAMPED: A Book Study

1) Comprehensive Book Study of Stamped, an important informational text, for students in grades 6 and above. Activities for each of the skills in the Common Core Standards are available in this product, and they are not dependent on each other, so you have the freedom to pick and choose which standards you want students to learn.

    • Opportunities to practice every CCSS skill for informational reading
    • You can customize to suit your needs. Each activity stands alone, to allow you to use some, but not all of the lessons and activities available.
    • Stamped tells the history of racism in the United States, and fills in many of the gaps left by corporatized curriculum.

2) Professional development for Educators that serves two purposes:

    • Teachers learn the specific skills for teaching informational text based on the Common Core standards
    • Staff engages in a series of professional development activities based on the book "Stamped" which tells the true story of racism in The United States. PD would center anti-racist teaching.

There is no difference in the materials, or the discussions, except that as the learner gets older the thoughts and discussions will become more nuanced and complex. The practical PD is providing teachers with an opportunity to learn the standards we often expect them to know, but rarely teach them, by applying them and practicing the skills themselves, using activities that can model for them how to incorporate literacy into the content of any classroom, not just the ELA classroom. The complex professional learning is rooted in the work of creating antiracist structures in our schools, and recognizing that our students and teachers should study the true history of the United States.
