Description

I developed and refined these products over the past twenty years and have used them will all levels of English classes. Research shows that students who read at least twenty minutes daily in books at their independent reading level and according to their interests will make growth as readers and can even begin to close any achievement gaps.

This self-selected silent-sustained reading routine emphasizes student choice.

Provides students choice in texts to read. Take them to the library. Continue to build your classroom library. Allow them to bring books from home. I do not allow them to read on devices because the temptation for distraction is too great. I allow students the choice of where to sit during this reading time.

I have had students read for 20 minutes a day in texts of their choice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in EC and ELL reading comprehension or sheltered English classes. In traditional English classes including AP Literature and AP Language, I embed this reading routine on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I collect their learning logs once a week for a grade.

Includes an instructional slideshow explaining the routine, learning log instructions and guidelines as well as sentence starters and guiding questions to help with metacognition, learning log examples, and a culminating book trailer project with examples, resources, and rubric.

--Also includes a digital learning log if you prefer not to take up notebooks physically.

Ready to plug and play in your Google Classroom or LMS of choice.

Help students become better, more active readers with this semester-long project.

My Honors English 2 students loved SSR last year. They reported that it as nice to be able to choose reading materials without analyzing and discussing it to death, and that they enjoyed the book trailer project at the end. They also stated that they learned more about themselves and reading from the learning log routine.
