One of the top questions I receive is: How do I assess social emotional learning?
Well, look no further. I created a full SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING ASSESSMENT KIT with teacher data tracking forms and student behavior self assessment forms designed to help you collect data and track observations for your students' social and emotional skills. This kit is best suited to elementary grade levels.
Data tracking can be difficult and feel like a lot of work - especially with more observational skills like student behavior! This resource is aimed to make the process simple and straightforward, while still giving meaningful behavior data.
Use the assessment kit to track students’ behavior and SEL skills in 2 ways:
- Student Behavior Self Assessment Surveys: Using these surveys, students will self-evaluate their own strengths and areas of growth in each SEL competency. This also gives you a better idea of their self-perception.
- Social Emotional Teacher Observation Checklists: These checklists are used to guide you through observing and reflecting on the student’s ability level of a variety of skills within each SEL competency.
Each assessment type includes 5 different assessments - one for each of the five competencies of SEL.
The resource also includes a teacher guide for use and how to score.

Why use self-assessments?
Using student behavior self assessments with elementary students to reflect on their social and emotional skills is a powerful tool for their growth and development. It allows them to take ownership of their learning and personal growth journey. Through self assessment, students can develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement in areas like empathy, self-regulation, and communication. It encourages self reflection and self awareness, helping them recognize their emotions and how they relate to others. It also fosters a sense of responsibility for their own behavior and emotional well-being. By engaging in self evaluation, students can set goals for personal growth and track their progress, making it a valuable tool in nurturing their social and emotional skills throughout their educational journey. The student self evaluation process gives you a glimpse into how the student views themself, giving you an opportunity to understand the student better and better determine their level of self awareness.
Tip for Insight: Look at your own data tracking sheet next to the student self reflection form. Notice what similarities and differences there are between your observations and their own self evaluation. Use these for meaningful conversations with the student and building self awareness!
