    ANIMALS & ECOSYSTEMS BUNDLE #1

    SUBJECTS: SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS

    GRADES : 5-8

This purchase is for various assignment sheets focusing on animals and ecosystems. These assignments are perfect for either in-class work, homework, or extra credit. Each worksheet is designed for Grades 6th – 8th but some minor changes should make any perfect for older or younger students as needed.

Included with this bundle package are the following assignments:

    1) ANIMAL FOOD WEBS

This assignment is great for an introduction to food webs (predator-prey relations in an ecosystem). It can also work as homework or extra credit.

Included are two unique food webs showing inter-relationships of animals in their ecosystems. Both food webs have specific questions that students need to answer. There is also a fill-in portion that provides numerous arrows and allows students time to consider the correct predator-prey that matches the arrow pattern provided.

    2) DATA GRAPH – FASTEST LAND ANIMALS

The assignment gives students 20 of the fastest land animals and their speed (mph). Students are tasked with identifying the 12 fastest animals in order and then designing an appropriate bar graph from the data. A great refresher for graphing data or an introduction for upper elementary.

    3) TWO ANIMAL PUZZLES (CRYPTOGRAM / CRISS-CROSS)

This is a fun puzzle sheet that works great with any animal unit. The worksheet is also ideal for homework.

The front side has an A-Z criss-cross puzzle with animal and ecosystem terms. Students have to place the terms into the grid based on the letter length of the word. Great also for spelling review.

The backside of the puzzle sheet has a cryptogram puzzle containing seven facts about world record mammals on our planet (largest mammal, smallest mammal, fastest, etc...).

    ANSWER KEY PROVIDED.

    4) ANIMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME (CROSSWORD-WEBQUEST)

NO PREP NEEDED! TECHNOLOGY & INTERNET REQUIRED!

NO COMPUTER LAB? LET STUDENTS USE THEIR PHONES!

This is a simple one-day technology search activity that students love. I usually save it for an End of the Year time when there's just the odd day to fill for a lesson plan.

This purchase is for a combination webquest-crossword puzzle that challenges students to identify the common names of 50 different animals based on the scientific names that have been provided.

Students love webquests and worksheets that feel more like a game so this assignment combines them for the best of both worlds. It's great to use with partners or can be substituted for homework or extra credit as well! ANSWER KEY PROVIDED.

    5) ANIMAL VOCABULARY QUIZ & STUDY GUIDE

This purchase is a perfect compliment for any unit focusing on animals. Students need to understand the vocabulary associated with the unit and these terms focus on: predator, prey, critical habitat, species, decomposer, carnivore, biped, food web, consumer, and more!

    1) 20 animal vocabulary terms and their definitions are provided on a study guide paper. The study guide is also great to use on various assignments and projects.

    2) A 34-question vocabulary quiz (matching, multiple choice, short answer, etc...) - ANSWER KEY PROVIDED

    6) EXTINCT ANIMALS WEBQUEST (RESEARCH)

This assignment is great to use in your school's computer lab, with iPads, or as a homework/extra credit assignment.

Students are asked to list 20 animals that have gone extinct between 1900-2015. They will then choose up to 10 of the animals from their list to complete some short information including: cause of extinction, species of animal, world location, and general facts.

    7) RAINFOREST DIAGRAM AND WORDSEARCH

This assignment is perfect for extra credit, homework, or a half hour time filler in class.

The front side of the assignment is a wordsearch with 19 animals that live in the rainforest ecosystems.

The back side of the assignment has a diagram of the layers of the rainforest and students are tasked with determining in which of these vertical layers the listed animals can be found.

    8) RAINFOREST WEBQUEST

This purchase is for a webquest that focuses on our planet's rain forests. The 18-question assignment will help students learn about: layers of the rain forest, continents, food webs, animals, insects, birds, and food chains.

The assignment is perfect for a one hour class period using technology or for a homework assignment during any animal or ecosystem unit.

    9) PROJECT: ANIMAL ECOSYSTEM POWER POINT / PREZI

This mini-project is great for 1-2 days having your students working with technology.

The goal of the lesson is for students to design a Power Point / Prezi with key vocabulary terms and pictures relating to animals and ecosystems.

    1) Start with a vocabulary webquest where students will choose 17 terms from a list of 35. They will need to use the Internet to find the best definition for the term connecting it to the theme of animals/ecosystems.

    2) A direction sheet is provided taking students through the requirements for each slide on the Power Point / Prezi project.

    3) A vocabulary definition sheet of all 35 animal/ecosystem terms is also provided. Having the terms can make the lesson go much quicker but I prefer having students find the definitions on their own in advance.

    10) CARNIVORE / HERBIVORE PUZZLE AND SENTENCE WRITING

This purchase is for two separate puzzle sheets that can be used in science or language arts class. They each work well as homework, extra credit, or as a simple twenty minute classroom assignment with the focus on key terms and writing.

CARNIVORES - The front side is a criss-cross vocabulary grid using numerous carnivore species names. The back side is a sentence writing exercise requiring students to use the key terms provided in their writing.

HERBIVORES - The front side is a criss-cross vocabulary grid using numerous herbivore species names. The back side is a sentence writing exercise requiring students to use the key terms provided in their writing.

    11) BILL NYE – BIODIVERSITY VIDEO WORKSHEET

*Video is needed for completion of this purchase*

This worksheet can be used to accompany the Bill Nye video BIODIVERSITY (Season 1, Episode 9).

The worksheet has 16 questions that help students stay focused on various science facts about biodiversity (the interactions and connections of all living things in nature). There are follow-up questions as well that students can complete on their own or through group discussions after the video.

The video needed for this assignment can be purchased as physical media (DVD) or through a variety of online streaming sites. Please be aware that many online sites change the availability of videos from month to month.

    12) DRAW A GIRAFFE

This is a great lesson for science classes or art classes. The lesson focuses on identifying physical characteristics of giraffes and having students use a grid to recreate a picture of a giraffe.

Included with this purchase is an explanation of the lesson (goals, directions), a master copy of the giraffe picture on a grid, a student gird for their picture, and a sample of the reduced giraffe.

    13) CREATE AN ANIMAL WORDSEARCH

This is a great worksheet for extra credit or partner work. Students must design a 20-animal wordsearch. They will then exchange papers with a partner to solve. An easy assignment to give when some students are finished early and you’re allowing the rest of the class extra time to catch up.

    14) CAREER WEBQUEST : MARINE BIOLOGIST

This internet assignment is designed to be used with www.sciencebuddies.org. Full directions for students to link to the correct page are provided with the webquest. The webquest helps students learn about the basics of this career choice, how it connects to science, high school and college course requirements for the career, job training, expectations for those who enter this career field, and the different marine animals and life that marine biologists work with.

    15) CAREER WEBQUEST : ANIMAL BREEDER

This internet assignment is designed to be used with www.sciencebuddies.org. Full directions for students to link to the correct page are provided with the webquest. The webquest helps students learn about the basics of this career choice, how it connects to the life sciences (DNA, genetics), high school courses and education training requirements for the career, qualifications as well as on-job training, expectations for those who enter this important career field, why this career is important to various species of animals, and more! An interview article and two short career videos are also linked to this webquest.

    16) DAILY SCIENCE ARTICLE: MURDER HRONET FAQ

This daily science article focuses on specific facts and information related to the new invasive species the Asian giant hornet a.k.a. "The Murder Hornet".
