Rwandan Genocide Mini-Unit

This is a mini-unit focused on the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. The unit is used in a World History class with 60 minute class periods and typically takes 3-4 class periods to complete. The unit includes guided notes about the history and events of the genocide, a timeline assignment using an internet-based article (which I print out for students), and a viewing of the movie "Hotel Rwanda". It is a great unit for teaching about the modern African issues as they related to the legacy of the colonial period and that is how it is framed in my class. The unit lesson plan I follow is:

Day One: General discussion on Genocide; Guided Notes of Rwanda Genocide of 1994 (students use skeleton outline to take notes on)
Day Two: Students complete Rwandan Genocide Timeline; Introduce and start "Hotel Rwanda"
Day Three: "Hotel Rwanda" with guided questions
Day Four: Finish "Hotel Rwanda"; Discuss movie
