Description

Are you still teaching Roman numerals? Really? Are you still living in the XIIIth century, or what?

Us XXIst century teachers know that in order to teach Roman numerals, you have to have a little bit o' fun added. This packet is the best way to do that!

Here's what you get:

I) A sample chapter from my upcoming rant "Place Value: You're Teaching It Wrong." Yes, you are, so don't deny it. This is a look at why Roman numerals are such a pain in the neck and compares them to Hindu-Arabic numerals (which is what we use today)

II) A Q & A activity where students look at a chart of Roman numerals and compare them to Arabic numerals. Includes such thought provoking questions like comparing the Arabic number 999 to the Roman version CMXCIX, as well as what number is missing from the Roman number system.

III) Two sets of puzzles where you take an incorrect equation written in Roman numerals and fix it by adding or removing one stick. You'll also learn why 9 - 1 = 10.

IV: Punch the Clock: Have you ever seen a digital clock that used Roman numerals? Neither have I. In this activity, you look a the time in Roman numerals and match it to the time in Arabic numerals. Yeah, I know it's a little ridiculous, but think of how silly your students will find this.....

V) Number the Popes: Okay, I know this is a little ridiculous, but I couldn't resist. Did you know there were XXIII popes named "John" (actually, the last pope named John was the XXIIIrd, but there weren't actually XXIII of them, which is a long story....) Anyway, cut out the pope cards, scramble them up and have the kids put them in order by Roman numerals. Fun!

Hey, you got a better way to spend $II.XLIX?
