Description

Language Arts and Social Studies go together like peanut butter and jelly (yum!) in this activity where students will explore the role of citizens in a society, write their own mini-books, and then peer edit each other's work. It's like a two-for-one instructional time special!

Your students will participate in three activities on their way to understanding the role of citizens in society.

I like to do this over two different days. I do the first activity on the first day, and then the other two. You can even separate out the last two. This makes it very flexible.

⚠️Prior Knowledge: For this lesson, students should be familiar with the role of rules and laws in our daily lives. Students should understand that rules and laws are necessary to be a productive citizen in our country.

Activities Include:
☑ Brainstorm what it means to be a citizen
☑ Create a rough draft
☑ Write a mini-book & eper edit

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES:

ACTIVITY 1: Brainstorm

In this activity, students will complete a graphic organizer that guides students’ thinking concerning the idea of what it means to be a citizen. Students will list ideas and answer questions about their role as productive citizens in the classroom, community and civic life. This brainstorm page will prepare students for Activity 2.

ACTIVITY 2: Create Rough Draft

For this activity, students will use their brainstorm page to create a rough draft of a mini-book that explains their role as a productive citizen in the classroom, community, or civic life. Students will have the option to write a story or create a comic book.

ACTIVITY 3: Peer Edit & Finalize!

Students will partner and share their rough drafts. Each student will provide guided feedback through a graphic organizer. Once feedback is provided, students will finalize their books and bind them. Students will have the opportunity to share or publish their final work.
