What educators are saying

My students were very engaged in this resource. They really enjoyed it working in small groups. Thank you for providing this for others to us.
I used this with my enriched 7th grade ELA class and the students were super engaged! It was fun for all of us, and it was so helpful to review the concepts that I introduced in class.

Description

Common Core Language and Reading Practice Using Song Lyrics: "Roar" by Katy Perry - updated for distance learning!

This IS included in Poetry Resources Bundle, Volume 2.

This activity uses popular song lyrics ("Roar" By Katy Perry, written by Bonnie McKee) to practice figurative language & poetic devices. It also includes exercises for students to analyze tone/mood and how the devices contribute to the overall meaning. *NEWLY ADDED (Feb. 26, 2014): Activities for analyzing word connotations (negative and positive connotative words/diction), syntax, and imagery.

In addition, it compares the song to two poems with similar themes. One by Edgar Lee Masters from his Spoon River Anthology and another by Edgar Guest. All activities are differentiated for multiple levels of learners.

Includes separate student handouts in Google Slides AND in an editable format (Microsoft Word) that can be shared electronically (posted for students on secure platform or emailed). Perfect for distance learning and 1:1. ALL handouts come in PDF format, as well. Teacher's answer key included.
