Description

This resource contains student note, 5 worksheets, two pair activities and answer keys in a zip file. It is created to suit for schools and home-schooling.

This resource is about the introduction to trigonometry where students learn part of a right-angled triangle such as the hypotenuse, adjacent and opposite sides.

The student flipbook version is also included.

Level of Difficulty: Beginner (Easy)

Grades: 9th to 11th

Outcomes: Students

  • identify the hypotenuse, adjacent and opposite sides for a given angle in a right-angled triangle
  • recognise that the ratio of matching sides in similar right-angled triangles is constant for equal angles

Prior Knowledge:

Students should have already studied Pythagoras’ Theorem

Also suitable for Australian Curriculum

  • Use similarity to investigate the constancy of the sine, cosine and tangent ratios for a given angle in right-angled triangles (ACMMG223)
  • Apply trigonometry to solve right-angled triangle problems (ACMMG224)
  • Apply Pythagoras’ theorem to solve problems (ACMEM116)
  • Apply the tangent ratio to find unknown angles and sides in right-angled triangles (ACMEM117)
  • Work with the concepts of angle of elevation and angle of depression (ACMEM118)
  • Apply the cosine and sine ratios to find unknown angles and sides in right-angled triangles (ACMEM119)
  • Review sine, cosine and tangent as ratios of side lengths in right-angled triangles (ACMMM028)
  • Review the use of the trigonometric ratios to find the length of an unknown side or the size of an unknown angle in a right-angled triangle (ACMGM034)

Prove theorems about triangles.
Use congruence and similarity criteria for triangles to solve problems and to prove relationships in geometric figures.
Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are properties of the angles in the triangle, leading to definitions of trigonometric ratios for acute angles.
