What educators are saying

Super helpful to engage my students in the text! I liked that I was able to pick and choose what I used.
My students enjoyed the work. It was easy for them to use and to understand and it worked well with a lesson plan I had created.

Description

Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan, is a great novel for grades 3, 4, and 5. The unit comes with detailed lesson plans for teaching reading comprehension skills and a TON of graphic organizers and resources for your students, both in printable PDF version and digital version! It's ready for use!

Make sure to click on the PREVIEW above to see what's included!

This unit plan focuses on character development as well as plot. Students will learn how to use information in the text to infer character traits and motives. They will also learn how to use the text to prove their own ideas about Charlotte and her experiences throughout the story.

*** Gain access to the digital part of this unit by uploading each resource through a link. There's a Digital Directions page in the folder with all links needed. You will be directed to make a copy to your Google Drive.

There are many different parts to this unit.

1. The detailed lesson plans are organized by chapter, not days, giving you the flexibility to decide how quickly or slowly to go. Each chapter includes vocabulary, a discussion or quick activity to introduce the chapter’s content, during reading and after reading lessons, and an extension idea, usually in the form of writing. I would most definitely cover the comprehension section of each lesson, as this will help you increase your students’ understanding of the text as well as their overall comprehension development.

2. Student Journal pages - copy the student journal pages before starting the novel, and your copies will be pretty much finished for the couple weeks! Journal pages follow along with the text, providing deep thinking, comprehension activities. Choose which pages you wish to assess, or give an overall grade for completion. Journal is in PDF/printable version and Digital.

3. Teacher Resource section - this section gives you various resources that you will need in the unit that are not included in the student journal. Examples include anchor charts and posters and poetry form directions.

4. Chapter vocabulary activities - you will have a list of vocabulary for each chapter and different graphic organizers to help your students master word meanings. These vocabulary words are not included on the tests - you decide which ones to use for assessment purposes. You can also add these on to your regular vocabulary work or use them as bonus words!

** Modified Digital activities included.

5. The chapter questions can be used as a reading guide or as a chapter quiz. Determine what works best for your students. Digital version is in Google Forms - perfect for grading!

6. Middle of the book and end of the book test. Tests questions are in multiple choice and short answer. Answer keys are included. Digital version in Google Forms!

7. End of the book project - Bio Bodies! You will have teacher directions and photo examples, student directions, and a rubric for quick grading.

You have everything you need to teach this great novel, except for the books!

Teacher Testimonials

I've used this with resource students in a guided reading group. I like the activities and will use this resource again. It has a variety of tasks that goes beyond the regular comprehension questions. - Jessica N.

I liked the questions for comprehension. I also liked that some of the pages had a check list to refer to after they were done such as: did I use capitals correctly, did I use complete sentences, punctuation correctly, does my answer make sense? This is a large resource with plenty to pick from depending on your needs. I'll be using it again! - Sue S.

We just started reading Riding Freedom earlier this week and this resource is a must have! The planning process was so easy with different activities for each chapter and it fit perfectly with what we had been doing in class. The kids love the book so far and are so engaged because of journal. Thank you so much! - Megan B.

Loved using this resource as we did a book unit on this text. Students enjoyed the organizational layout of the packet. It lead to many great discussions about the text. Was super easy and quick to prepare. - Ronda P.
