Rhythm and Time Signature Music Class Escape Room Activity

If your upper elementary music students are like mine, they will be completely engaged with this rhythm and time signature themed escape room! This is a perfect review activity at the beginning or end of the year, a unit review assessment, or as a low- or no-prep sub option! The tasks are ready to print and go! Enhance the experience and student excitement by added secret folders and envelopes (optional!)

As my 4th grade gifted and talented music students participated in this activity, I observed:

• Every student on every ability level was engaged and participated the whole 45 minute class period. They complained when it was time to go!
• Students had a very high level of satisfaction being able to have instant feedback on if their work was done correctly or not! If they did not have the correct answer, they were able to problem solve and work out the solution (mostly) independently.
• I, as the teacher, was able to circulate and give students mini-lessons to answer questions as they came up. Because the activity was self-correcting, my time was spent teaching those who needed it!

Task Preview:

• Task 1: Students will cut out the definitions to 6 vocabulary terms and match them. Matching the definitions to the terms will create the key for writing out the secret rhythm.
• Task 2: Students will determine if each rhythm has the correct number of beats to match the time signature. Students will add up the correct and incorrect numbers to find the secret stich.
• Task 3: Students will sort rhythms into 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures. More adding will help determine the lock combination.
• Task 4: Students will use their visual tracking skills (important for reading music!) to complete the maze. They will create a rhythm with the notes and symbols they find when the maze is completed correctly.
• Task 5: Students will use their knowledge of the parts of speech to create a silly, music mad lib using musical performance as in inspiration for the story's theme.

For Lower Paper Usage:

The directions for this escape room are availably in many different formats. To reduce paper usage, you may print the half-page directions (without the story) and set up each task as a station. You may also print/laminate several copies of the movable pieces or task pages for re-use by students.

I only print one copy of the answers and clip them to the board for students to use to check their work.
