Description

Empower your students to think critically about ANY TEXT with this highly engaging rhetorical analysis game! Students will beg to play KABOOM as a review, discussion, or oral rehearsal for upcoming assessment.

To play KABOOM, students draw rhetorical analysis questions from a cup. If they answer the question accurately, they keep the question. If they draw a KABOOM icon, they must return all their questions to the cup and start again. The game goes as long as you'd like--and when it's over, the student with the most questions in his or her hand wins!

This KABOOM set is designed for high school English students who need to practice and hone their analytical skills.

It's flexible.
-Use it as a quick warm-up, or allow up to an entire class period to play.
-Use with individuals in small groups, as a learning station, or with whole-class teams.
-Adjust the questions to focus on your priorities. Questions are organized by concept: purpose, audience, subject, tone, author's bias, structure and organization, and style. Play with only those questions that meet your needs.

Multiple options allow for teacher-generated and student-generated keys.

Assembly is required. You'll need to print and cut the pieces, then use glue or double-sided tape to attach them to Popsicle sticks. You'll also need a storage system (cans or jars work well). Color and black-and-white versions are included for printing.

The learning doesn't stop when the game is over. This game kit includes an extended thinking prompt page (students will choose two questions and expand their responses in writing), a reflection worksheet, and a student handout with all 75+ rhetorical analysis questions.

KABOOM is a fun way to get students involved in discussions as you reinforce the kinds of questions they should ask of texts and speeches through rhetorical analysis. Use it all year round!
