Retained Reflexes and Impact on Child Development and Function
Description
Retained primitive reflexes can have a massive impact on a child’s ability to engage in their everyday occupations. (These of course include play, school, leisure, sleep, feeding, and social participation!)
A few of the main ways that we can help students improve their function and independence is by considering 1) sensory input and 2) positioning.
By considering these two aspects of our classrooms and in our treatment sessions, we can help support development and reflex integration—and overall participation and success at school.
1. Incorporate activities that promote sensory play and exploration
2. Incorporate positioning that will promote mature postural responses♀️
*Disclaimer: Reflexes were grouped based on their SIMILAR impact on function. Activities to support development/integration are also grouped together for aesthetics. Information obtained through my own review of the research.
