Teacher's Notes on this Essay Prompt:

This is the modified edition of enduring issue number ei35 in my collection. The texts are at an upper elementary reading level.

This was the first enduring issue essay I composed and its original theme is pretty obvious: law codes. Nonetheless, students see many issues running through these: trade, slavery and social hierarchy, and even cultural diffusion can be addressed effectively (all the law codes here were exported to other civilizations).

Students have excerpts from Hammurabi`s Code, Asoka`s Rock Edicts, the Twelve Tables of Rome, and Justinian`s Code. The map is of the whole Afro-Eurasian trade network. Students can bring a world of outside information to these texts from all of these civilizations and comment easily on how these elements continue to be echoed into the present.
