Description

The Refugee (by Alan Gratz) assessment package provides a complete suite of materials to assess your students' ELA skills and their comprehension of the novel. The package includes mini-quizzes for each 3 chapters, 2 vocabulary quizzes, a final literary exam, a comprehension test, and 3 essays all of which were intentionally aligned to cover a variety of critical common core state standards and skills. Answer keys are provided for all resources.

Digital Compatibility: This resource is also technology friendly! It can be utilized in classrooms where computers or tablets are central to instruction because the resource has been adapted for digital completion. The resource includes links for students to complete the assessments in Google Forms. For instance, students can work with the documents in Google Drive™ or via Google Classroom. With these links, you can have students complete their assessments online. All they will have to do is fill out the form! There are links for every assessment, making the format friendly not only for technology but also trees.

The quizzes provide questions to gauge student comprehension. Meanwhile, the exam and essays include higher order thinking questions that prompt analytic thinking and allow for evaluation of their analytic skills. The comprehension test assesses students' knowledge of the characters and events of the novel. In sum, the 46-page resource will allow you to check-in with students daily and assess their learning across a range of key skills.

The pack includes 18 mini-quizzes to test students' comprehension of each 3 chapter set. Each quiz contains 3 questions varying in difficulty. The test includes a variety of items aligned to CCSS in different formats, such as character-quote matching, multiple-choice, short answer questions, sequence and order, true or false, and fill-in-the-blank. The essays are based on a multi-paragraph assignment and includes a checklist with scaffolding to support struggling writers.

More specifically, the assessment items evaluate the following skills:

• Identify conflict, types of conflict, and analyze the effects on character and plot

• Identify themes of the novel and analyze the lesson learned

• Analyze character through quote matching section

• Identify elements of plot and analyze connection to conflict

• Make inferences and support with textual evidence

• Identify the main idea of a passage with evidence

• Identify author's tone and attitude

• Identify and analyze the point of view of the text

• Identify and analyze the setting of the text

The preview contains a sample for various sections of the test. If you're looking for more Refugee resources to complement this one, please check out the literary analysis guide below.
