Red Ribbon Week Depth and Complexity Frames and Activities

Red Ribbon Week can happen any week! Let’s teach our kids to be drug, alcohol, and tobacco free by incorporating the prompts of Depth and Complexity not only for our GATE (Gifted and Talented) kids, but for all kids! This pack offers educational Depth and Complexity frames, and engaging activities to get your kids communicating, writing, thinking, creating, and saying no to drugs! Get your students to clearly understand the impact narcotics can have on its victims as well as others involved. Your students will also analyze situations from different perspectives, create their own red ribbon, discuss why they want to be drug free, and even role play different situations in which they need to make “What would you do?” decisions. Why not use one page a week, or one every few weeks?

Never used Depth and Complexity icons or frames in your classroom? No problem! None of your students are identified as GATE? Still not a problem! This packet is for all students and detailed directions are included for each page. I’ve used frames and the prompts of Depth and Complexity with all of my students (GATE or not), and they really enjoy it!

This bundle includes:

+ 1 Depth and Complexity Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco Note Taking Organizer

+3 Different Frames featuring Depth and Complexity (new icons included) and the Content Imperatives

+3 Frames (same as above) which include cooperative learning structures built in: Keep students engaged in a team dynamic as they learn to work together.

+ Task cards to use in addition to or instead of the frames (in color and black & white): Use as a way to get students communicating with each other and practicing the icons

+ Drug Free Pride Ribbon: Students can create their own ribbon with or without the use of icons

+ Depth and Complexity and Content Imperative Chart with a short summary of each icon (including new prompts) to use for each activity. This will help students with the ribbon activitiy.

+ Mix-Pair-Share Drug Free Me: Students will get the chance to mix around the room and discuss being drug free using the prompts of Depth and Complexity.

+ If We Could Talk: If drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes could talk, what would they say? Kids have a chance to create dialogue focusing on details of each drug’s point of view.

+”What Do You Do?” Worksheet: Students read six different scenarios in which peer pressure is involved. They will need to explain what they would do in that particular situation. They will also practice how to say “no” to friends in question number seven.

+ Depth and Complexity A Healthy Me: Put students in groups or pairs and ask them to complete this page. Each group will be given a specific drug free big idea, and they will use the planner to assist them in preparing some kind of creative presentation on their big idea. These drug free behaviors are included on the following page.

+ 3 Pages of Suggestions for Use are also included. This also includes how to use the embedded cooperative learning structures.
