    Description

Through this engaging series of lessons, students will analyze whether African Americans really attained freedom through the Reconstruction Era.

☆☆☆ Engaging, student-centered, and make for the middle school mind! ☆☆☆

Reconstruction Begins - This lesson provides a clear overview of the major plans related to Reconstruction. Students will compare Lincoln and Johnson's plans, along with Republican Reconstruction and Radical Reconstruction.

Freedom Achieved? - Evaluating the Success of Reconstruction - With this stations activity, students access whether American Americans really gained freedom during the era of Reconstruction. By analyzing primary sources relating to six topics (Convict Leasing, Sharecropping, Building Black Communities, Black Leadership, Poll Taxes/Literacy Tests and the Black Codes), students see that the freedom was farther away than most assume.

Slavery by Another Name - This video covers the slavery that came after the passage of the 13th amendment. It deals specifically with convict labor and debt peonage. There are interviews with descendants of those placed in convict labor or debt peonage along with reenactments and historical context.

Reconstruction Ends - This lesson provides a clear overview of the ending of Reconstruction. Students will learn about the process and policies which ended Reconstruction.

Reconstruction - Word Wall - Help your students build and retain key vocabulary terms with a visually appealing word wall. This resource includes 37 word wall terms related to the Early Presidents, vocabulary review strategies, and a review puzzle to support your students' learning.

Reconstruction - Review and Exam - Assess your students’ critical thinking skills with these skill-based exams that focus on the topics addressed in each of these lessons. Two different versions of the exam are included along with a review sheet to make sure that students are prepared. There are two exams provided in this Unit.

This zip file includes a PDF version, a PowerPoint version, and a link to Google Slides version for all products. (The Word Wall is provided in a PowerPoint and PDF.) Both the PowerPoint and the Google Slides versions are fully EDITABLE. I've also included a Unit outline to help you plan!
