In 2016, a Stanford University study was conducted showing that a staggering 82% of students from middle school to college could not determine real from fake news. (https://sheg.stanford.edu/upload/V3LessonPlans/Executive%20Summary%2011.21.16.pdf) While there are many factors to blame, SOCIAL MEDIA is a major contribution to this. This lesson teaches students to question what they see on social media and puts them to the test.
This lesson includes:
1. Full lesson plan with COMMON CORE and ISTE standards.
2. Step by step guide on how to present lesson and student learning activities.
3. Hook activity using interactive word cloud on mentimeter.com
4. Google Slides notes (tips on how to spot a fake news story) with guided notes copy
5. Colored squares for individual and group activity - these can be interchanged for colored Popsicle sticks if you have them
6. 4 articles for students to evaluate (2 real, 2 fake)
*NOTE* This is especially important! I downloaded the "social media post," article, and site information as PDF Documents. This is because when showing students online examples of fake news articles, those sites are often flooded with viruses and/or inappropriate material.
