What educators are saying

Systems of linear equations is a difficult topic for 8th graders. This was a very good way to show real-world examples. After working one of the problems together as a whole group, students were able to complete the other scenarios on their own with little assistance.
Lots of great linear system of equations real world examples for my Pre-Algebra students to work with.

Description

I am always looking for more ways to make my classroom more student-centered. If I can ever avoid directly teaching my students, I do it. The eight resources that are contained in this product help me to accomplish that when I introduce my students to solving systems of equations.

The resources contained in this product each contain a real world scenario and will ask students to write equations in slope intercept form that describe each scenario. Students will also be asked to graph both equations that they have created. Finally, students will be asked questions about the graph they have created. Without knowing it, students will learn how to solve a system of equations by graphing. Each resource also contains a “Checking for Understanding” section to make sure students truly understand all aspects of the real world situation that they are investigating.

For more details, please download the preview.

**Disclaimer- In order for this product to work well with your students, students must be comfortable reading real world situations and writing equations in slope intercept form**

Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. For example, given coordinates for two pairs of points, determine whether the line through the first pair of points intersects the line through the second pair.
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.
