Description

I created this flipchart to teach students about parallel and perpendicular lines, as well as review acute, obtuse, and right angles.

The first page shows a map of down town Chattanooga, Tennessee. There are written instructions giving examples of streets that are parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting. I called on volunteers to come up to the board and find/highlight the streets mentioned, using a different color for each example. When they finished, we looked at the streets and I asked the students to tell me what parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines are.

The next page reviews angels on the same map. I asked the students to highlight examples of different kinds of angles.

The last 3 pages show pictures of places or things with lots of lines. I had students come up to the board and circle examples of parallel and perpendicular lines found in these real life examples.
My students had a very good time with this lesson, and especially got into the real life examples, even finding lines I hadn't seen.

I hope this lesson goes as well for you as it did for me!
