Description

Classifying real numbers is a topic that can be confusing for students. Knowing the difference between the definitions and determining the traits that they share is key to the understanding of this concept. In this download, you will get 3 different kinds of charts to help classify real numbers:

1. concentric circles: includes title, definition, and examples of irrational numbers, rational numbers, integers, whole numbers, and natural numbers

highlights the shared qualities of real

2. flowchart: allows students to ask yes/no questions in order to arrive at the correct label for their real number

helpful when the student has a specific number in mind

3. grid: shows the similar and different traits of real numbers (irrational numbers, rational numbers, integers, whole numbers, and natural numbers)

pinpoints the specific qualities of each real number category

There are 2 types of prints! Full-color and printer-friendly grayscale!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
Write, interpret, and explain statements of order for rational numbers in real-world contexts. For example, write -3ยฐ ๐ถ > -7ยฐ ๐ถ to express the fact that -3ยฐ ๐ถ is warmer than -7ยฐ ๐ถ.
Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
Understand ๐˜ฑ + ๐˜ฒ as the number located a distance |๐˜ฒ| from ๐˜ฑ, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether ๐˜ฒ is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
