Description

The text is from the Perfection Learning What on Earth? textbook with the article "Battle for the Rain Forest" by Joe Kane.

This close reading is prepared for the use of the gradual release model and a close reading.

The first page features a reading for meaning chart, a strategy from The Core Six Essential Strategies for Achieving Excellence with the Common Core.
The chart has a statement in the middle which students must prove to be either true or false by providing evidence for or against the statement. The evidence should be quoted from the text.

Under the chart are two Think-Pair-Share-Write questions that force students to think critically. The chart helps students build up their understanding to so they're prepared to answer the difficult questions.

The handout allows for differentiation in a small group environment.
