Reading and Writing Inventories

Looking for a way to know your kids as readers and writers? Using inventories and checklists will help you better understand your kids and how they feel about reading and writing!

In order to create effective instruction differentiated to meet the needs of all learners, we MUST get to know them as readers and writers!

With this product, you can start off the year with a bang! Many of us do this at the beginning of the year and then it is done. However, to really make an impact I would suggest using these not only at the beginning of the year but at the mid-point and end of the year. What a great way to see change over time and how your teaching has influenced that change!

Both reading and writing inventories are for grades K-5 and available in Spanish too.

The writing inventory comes with an Excel spreadsheet so that you can see your kids' responses at a glance. You can choose to interview your kids one on one or have them write their responses. You will no doubt have lots of data that you can use.

My K-1 Reading Interest Inventory uses pictures. I would do this either in whole group or small group. There are 8 questions that you would read to the students and they would circle the feeling that they most identify with at the time of the survey. The remaining two questions can be read to them and you can encourage them to do their best writing in order to respond. This will give you immediate insight into their writing ability. You can also use the last two short answer questions as interview questions that you could do one on one during the first week of school.

With my Reading Interest Inventory for grades 2-5, you can use these questions as you interview your students OR have them fill it out at school or for homework. This inventory is also available Spanish as so many of us have Spanish-speaking kids. If you do use the Spanish version, be sure you have someone who can translate their responses! By providing a Spanish version, you are making those students feel accepted right away!
