Description

This 11 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to read and use pictographs to compare information. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 4.2 - 1st grade, but can be used for a variety of grade levels. This lesson begins with the “Problem of the Day” in which students are given word problem that reviews tally marks that they must solve before moving onto pictographs. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary term(s) needed to understand the content of the lesson: pictograph. Next, the teacher demonstrates pictographs by asking students their favorite enrichment, the information is then displayed on the promethean board for the students to compare the information. Next is the “Raining Cats and Dogs Activity” in which the students are shown a picture of it raining cats and dogs, and they are to fill in the pictograph using cat whiskers to represent the number of cats in the picture, and dog tails to represent the number of dogs on the Promethean Board. The next 2 slides have have students manipulate the images to complete the pictographs by dragging images at the bottom onto the chart - the first uses apples and bananas, the second uses Halloween candy! Next, the students are shown a pictograph of favorite school lunches and are to read the information and answer questions about the pictograph. The next page gives a higher order thinking review and closure question to check for students’ understanding of the lesson taught (if you don’t have the corresponding Houghton Mifflin textbook, then just adjust the closure question to one of the pictographs within the flipchart). The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The last page gives a math journal entry in which students are to create their own pictograph using people, pets, and toy cars - they may decide on how many they want for each and draw in the symbols.
