Description

To celebrate reading this year, try teaching books by authors from different cultures starring characters from diverse backgrounds. Students should be reading books that celebrate the diversity in the United States and a week devoted to reading is the perfect time!

Students will be able to follow along with their own Road Trip Journal, as they "travel" across the United States visiting where each author grew up.

These diverse, female authors also help your class celebrate Women's History Month, which takes place at the same time as the traditional reading week.

What's included in each day:

  • A short biography of the author
  • Fun facts about the state the author is from
  • A capture sheet for notes about the state with primary lines
  • A capture sheet for notes about the state with regular lines
  • A standards aligned mini-lesson
  • A standards aligned activity to accompany the book with primary lines
  • A standards aligned activity to accompany the book with regular lines

This resource includes activities for 6 different books, giving you a different text for each day of the week (and a bonus text, in case your class has already read one of the books or in case one of the books is more difficult for you to find). An editable powerpoint is included so you can change the numbers of each "Stop" on the road trip.

You will need the following books (they are not included in this resource):

  • Under My Hijab by Hena Khan
  • Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson
  • Bee-bim Bop! by Linda Sue Park
  • My Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco
  • The Rainbow Tulip by Pat Mora
  • Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle
