What educators are saying

The students were excited to create their monsters, and even got started on the project during break on the second day! It was a great way to use ratio language and apply equivalent ratios to a problem. Print and go!- No prep. Thanks for this resource!
This is the perfect little project to break up the routine for my students and give them a fun way to practice learning about ratios.

Description

Ratios Project

Students work independently on this ratios project to show an understanding of ratios and equivalent ratios.

General Information:

For this silly project, students create a family of monsters that share similar traits. Although each member of the monster family does not look identical, the ratio of their body parts stay consistent within the family. This project allows students to show their understanding of ratios, equivalent ratios, and writing ratios in simplest form. Each student creates his own ratio monster family while practicing writing ratios in fraction form, with a colon, and with the word “to”.

⏲️ Project Pacing:

The project is designed to be completed in one or two forty-five minute periods. However, the project may be introduced during class and completed at home.

Set-up/Materials:

Required Materials for Paper Project...

- glue sticks or liquid glue

- colored pencils, crayons, or markers

Suggested Materials for Paper Project...

- googly eyes

- pipe cleaners

- scissors

- construction paper or cardstock

Prefer Digital?

If preferred, students may create the monsters digitally and submit electronically or print. This option usually takes students less time with the same practice with ratios.

Digital Materials:

- Access to device with internet

- printer (optional)

Standards

Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
