Description

Once students have finished reading Flowers for Algernon, take 3 days to watch and analyze clips from the 1968 film Charly, starring Cliff Robertson. Three worksheets (graphic organizers) have been provided to assist students in the comparison - hitting RL8.7 (comparing text to film). Students are first asked to summarize the clip of the day, and then analyze when/how the film departed from or stayed true to the original text. There are specific directions to pay close attention to the actor Cliff Robertson and the choices he makes while playing Charlie Gordon - attitudes, mannerisms, speech, and actions.

The entire film is not appropriate (or necessary) to watch with students. View the film by yourself first and carefully choose three clips you´d like students to analyze and compare. Clips should be no longer than 20-30 minutes so that students have time to discuss what they noticed and complete the film guide worksheet.
