Description
Product 1:
I developed these slides and guided notes to help break down what the academic standard RL.10.2 is asking.
Ready to plug and play in your digital classroom. I post the slides and note sheet online for students that are absent, and present the slides in class. Students are provided with printed note-taking sheets when they are present on the day of the guided notes.
Help your students become more critical readers as they prepare for the North Carolina English II EOC (or similar assessments) and learn to establish a literary text’s theme, trace it throughout the work, and closely examine how it is first introduced, how it progresses, how it evolves, and how it is clarified through key details. Using the theme and key details, as well as to summarize the text in an unbiased manner.
Includes a t-chart graphic organizer for determining what to include in an objective summary of literary texts as well as links to other graphic organizers for tracing the development of theme.
Bonus: Story map graphic organizer on Easel.
Product 2: companion lessons Determining and Analyzing Theme; Writing Objective Summaries (2 slideshows) and graphic organizer
I developed these slides so you didn't have to! Students in my 9th and 10th grade English classes regularly struggle with determining theme and tracing its development. Slide deck minilesson 1 reviews the concept of theme, offers tips and examples for where to uncover elements of theme, and sets students up for success as they practice this skill when actively and closely reading their independent texts. Slidedeck minilesson 2 reviews objective summary, how to write one, and provides examples. Comes with a graphic organizer to help students write objective summaries and a completed example.
Includes objectives and I Can statements to focus learning.
Comes with a practice activity and answer key! Teach your students the theme formula so they are able to easily formulate theme statements after reading literary texts. Includes examples from Romeo and Juliet as you review the concept of theme and practice analyzing the development of themes in a text most 10th graders have read.
Ready to plug and play in your Google Classroom or LMS of choice.
I developed and taught this lesson after introducing the academic standard using the guided notes in product 1. It was the perfect companion lesson to reinforce the academic vocabulary learned after breaking down the academic standard.
Also includes a bonus product--an active reading strategies handout for your students, designed to help them become better readers.
Product 3: Use this hyperdoc for distance-learning or in-person learning with your 1-1 devices. The text to the poem, an audio of the poem, ACES writing strategy notes, and theme notes are linked and a rubric is included. This annotation guide helps students to discover the theme of the poem and then write an analytical paragraph on the theme of the poem. (Can be adapted to any poem or short story). I created this resource for use as a teacher-led lesson in hybrid and virtual classrooms of 9th and 10th grade EC, ESL, and regular education students but it also worked well with my honors level students as independent work.
Product 4: Tie it all together with these interactive slide show, guided notes, quick write, poster activity, and inferencing mini-lesson as you launch your short story unit and practice literary analysis.
Product 5: Additional practice identifying theme with a short story printable.
