    Active Reading Strategies

    Description

Do your students struggle with reading comprehension questions that ask them to select the best textual evidence to support their response? If so, this bundle is for you! 3 great products at an excellent price! Everything you need to teach your students the academic vocabulary in the standard, a graphic organizer for practice, and a companion lesson to explore choosing thorough and sufficient textual evidence in multiple choice questions and constructed response items.

Bonus: Includes an Active Reading Strategies handout designed to help your students become better readers as they closely read independent text.

Product 1: I developed these slides and guided notes to help break down what the academic standard RI/RL 10.1 is asking.

Ready to plug and play in your digital classroom. I post the slides and note sheet online for students that are absent, and present the slides in class. Students are provided with printed note-taking sheets when they are present on the day of the guided notes.

Help your students become more critical readers as they prepare for the North Carolina English II EOC (or similar assessments) and learn to cite textual evidence to support inferences made from the text.

    Graphic organizer provided on Easel.

Product 2: I developed these slides so you didn't have to! Students in my 9th and 10th grade English classes regularly struggle with selecting the best textual evidence to support given responses to multiple choice questions.

This slide deck teaches your students the importance of closely reading and annotating a text in order to make inferences and reviews methods of annotation as well as how to select the best evidence for multiple choice questions and constructed responses.

Comes with two short practice activities and answer key! Peer/self review form included for the writing component. Includes I can statement to focus student learning.

Ready to plug and play in your Google Classroom or LMS of choice.

I taught this lesson after introducing the academic standard using the guided notes in product 1. It was the perfect follow-up activity to reinforce the previous lesson.

Product 3: I adapted this graphic organizer from NCDPI's Understanding the NC English Language Arts Standard Course of Study ELA STANDARDS WITH CLARIFICATIONS AND GLOSSARY.

While using this graphic organizer, students are asked first to gather evidence from the text and then to make inferences and draw conclusions from that evidence. This graphic organizer was used by students when close reading using the ritual described by Lehman and Roberts in Falling in Love with Close Reading: Lessons for Analyzing Texts--and Life (2014).

I first modeled this practice of close reading with the students using a whole group text. We read "The Gift of the Magi" by O'Henry, and decided to focus on looking for clues about their economic circumstances. Then students continued to use this graphic organizer in small groups while each group reread the story looking for different patterns. For the remainder of the semester, this graphic organizer was used with self-selected texts as well as the literature we read together as a class.

This graphic organizer helps students to become better, more attentive readers and prepares them for the NC English II EOC (and other similar standardized tests of reading comprehension).
