MANAGING THE CLASSROOM "REAL WORLD" BLUEPRINT GUIDE FOR INTEGRATING MANAGERS.

Managing the Classroom is the first in a series to help you structure your lessons in an exciting way as students apply business principles to any subject you teach in grades K-12. This curriculum guide is revolutionary and will make a huge impact within your classroom to guide your students to a career-ready future while integrating restorative practices, economic development and culture proficiency.

Inside this first manual in her series, you will be introduced to the form and structure of her success. You’ll find developmental checklists, structured time management options, in addition to details as you enrich your lesson plans and goals.

    • Insights to learning style techniques that are easily adapted to each and every classroom composition help you have a foundation for your district’s outcomes matrix while you exceed the expectations of parents and students alike.
    • Example lesson plans with timed exercises for the six phases of business model implementation.
    • Student/Manager role descriptions to have them live the part of a "REAL WORLD" business leader while accomplishing their responsibilities.
    • Instructional approaches should vary, but teachers will learn how to better handle a differentiated instruction classroom. We educate teachers to be flexible in their approach and adjust the curriculum and delivery of information to learners rather than expecting students to modify their own learning.
    • Teachers will learn how to establish a culturally proficient environment.
    • Teachers will learn how to restorative behavior practices within the classroom.
    • Teachers will learn to create a student-centered classroom.

In this curriculum guide, I outlined responsibilities of each job position that I employ in my classroom. I wrote each position in a similar style to a job description that one might find posted on a company website so that each feels like a real business position. Some positions are more intensive than others, so in certain descriptions I have added examples of what a student in that position might say and do as part of their job. It is important for you to review the responsibilities of these positions with the students. I use the classroom job positions model and it has been working effectively for years to parallel to the real-world roles. See the below Table of Contents for specifics on business jobs within the classroom and review the entire guide with lessons.

    • About the Author

Modeling your classroom after a business requires commitment and dedication from all parties, but the benefits can be astonishing. Watching students take initiative, demonstrate loyalty, and contribute to a bigger cause can be very rewarding for all.

I believe that we can better prepare students for the technology demands and the fast-paced professional environment that they will experience in the workplace.

But what does “career-ready” really mean? After working in business and management for over 20 years, I’ve come to define a career-ready individual as a person who can make decisions, problem-solve, engage in critical thinking, analyze situations to overcome problems, and set goals.

Grounded in these basic skills, I have developed a business curriculum that can be adapted to any classroom and any age of student. This manual differs from other classroom management guides in one prominent way: I manage my classroom by directly tying it to the curriculum to create a culturally proficient environment and restore behavior practices. My students walk into my classroom, which transforms itself from a standard computer lab into a bustling and productive business environment.

Most 7th through 12th grade schools have incorporated business-based curriculums; however, many instructors lack the business experience necessary to create realistic context for their lesson plans. This leaves students unprepared to establish a strong foundation for hands-on experience in the workforce. I believe that we can better prepare students for the technology demands and the fast-paced professional environment that they will experience in the workplace.

In this manual, I will show you how to lay the groundwork for your own classroom and provide you with examples to create as realistic of a career-ready environment for your students as possible. See below for some of the Parents and School Administrator testimonials.

PARENT AND ADMINISTRATION TESTIMONIALS - Praise for Eva Foxwell’s Methodology and Outcomes

“Your students were outstanding. You should be very proud. I’m cc’ing Amanda to schedule a visit. Thanks!” - Delaware Governor Jack Markell

“Eva is an extraordinary teacher, a respected leader among her colleagues, and a kind and generous human being devoted to helping students succeed…I have watched Eva grow as an educator and witnessed how the work she has done with her students continues to evolve and challenges them to greater things. She consistently goes above and beyond, developing a highly successful Business program, earning a Superstar in Education Award and a lifelong influence on her students.” - Hugh Broomall, Ed.D. Deputy Superintendent

Where do I begin...I honestly cannot say enough about how much Mrs. Foxwell has impacted both my daughters’ education.  My one daughter is now a junior at Wilmington Charter and always says how much Mrs. Foxwell prepared her for High School.   Not only did she teach her about safe technology, but she also prepared her for real life situations. (Public speaking, the importance of eye contact and to always have confidence in yourself). My daughter has matured so much since being in the class, she has gained confidence in herself and her work.  She interviewed for Conrad and DMA and both schools commented on her professionalism. Mrs. Foxwell is by means not an easy teacher, she pushes them to do their best and to be proud of their work and that will follow them for life.  The kids knew they had to be prepared for her class and they were eager to show her. She makes them think and I love that!! She is so passionate about her students and it shows in everything they do. I am so grateful my girls got the opportunity to have her in their lives. Proud BSS Parent

Business Technology at BSS has given my son real life, applicable skills that will help him tremendously in his academic and professional life, and have already been invaluable in the high school application process.  Eva Foxwell’s dedication to her students and genuine desire for them to succeed is incredibly impressive; the respect that she so naturally earns from her students truly brings out the best in them. Proud BSS Parent

“Business Technology has given my daughter tools that she will utilize throughout her entire life. The material is presented in a ‘real world’ way. There are direct links made by class as to how this sort of organization and process will help them better succeed and achieve their goals.” - Proud BSS Parent

"Business Technology was my child's most difficult and demanding class and by far her favorite.  Ms. Foxwell is very skillful at motivating the children to reach her high expectations by pairing real life skill acquisition with the children's desire to have more responsibility and to be seen as mature and capable young adults. Three of my children benefited from Mrs. Foxwell's Business Technology class by learning life lessons.  My sons, one is a 7th grader and the other a freshman in high school enjoyed the business plans they created helping them with time management and organizational skills.  My daughter, a junior in high school benefited from the resume building skills she learned from Mrs. Foxwell, giving her a head start in her Business class and job search." - Proud BSS Parent

"Mrs. Foxwell gave my son a confidence I had never seen before! She established a trust with him, but with all her students. She was not just their teacher, she was and is a trusted and safe person they can go and talk to about anything! My son is now in high school and frequently brings up Mrs. Foxwell's class. He shakes the hands of others with confidence and speaks to others with conviction. This is all due to the way Mrs. Foxwell taught them. She gets to know her students (her kids) and their families. I have been very blessed to get to know her and very thankful my son had her as a teacher." Proud BSS Parent

"The Business Technology class at Brandywine Springs School is a wonderful class. Eva Foxwell teaches our kids the life skills they may not otherwise learn. They learn the importance of being leaders, from firm handshakes to controlling their monies and their businesses. She makes every aspect of this program fun while holding very high standards for the students. Our students are so lucky to have Eva Foxwell as their teacher. She is passionate about these children and helping them get ahead in life. Both of my sons have had the privilege of having her and both say the same. They love her and her class!! She loves her students and it shows!!! Her motto is like Nike, “just do it!” Every kid remembers that too! My older son, who is in high school, still remembers what she taught and uses some of it now!!! Her strong passion for what she does gives them the passion to come through for her!! This class is so important and I am grateful we have it at BSS!!" Proud BSS Parent

"Mrs. Foxwell has brought real world experiences directly to our children. My daughter is a more confident public speaker, prepared for interviews, and has an understanding of day to day business such as balancing a check book and creating and maintaining a budget for both personal and business expenses.  I wish I had the same opportunities my daughter has had by being a student of Eva Foxwell and Business Technology at Brandywine Springs School." Proud BSS Parent

"Business Technology is one of the few classes the kids take that offers “real world” experience—resumes, interviews, cover letters, etc.  I have had two children go through Ms. Foxwell’s curriculum, and it has been very clear to me how much she cares about her students.  When my kids tried to coast in her class, she was willing to focus on them individually, and she challenged them to excel and succeed.  It was very evident that she cares about her students as individuals and really wants them to succeed, not just in her class, but in life." Proud BSS Parent

"The Business Networking Event at BSS has become a must attend for me. I am so impressed with the work of the 7th grade students in the development of their business plans and the level of detail involved. Each year I have parents share that they wish they had a course like this in High School or College. As impressive as the business knowledge is the development of the student’s soft skills and how professionally they interact with adults during the event. Mrs. Foxwell is an extraordinary teacher and the Business Networking Event is a great demonstration of the student’s achievement." Hugh Broomall, Deputy Superintendent of Red Clay Consolidated Schools

"I was amazed with the work and knowledge the 7th graders had about starting their own business.  They completed an entire business from the ground up.  I believe some of the things my son learned, I did not learn until I was in college as a business major.  I was thoroughly impressed with the leadership from Mrs. Foxwell.  My son created the business of his dreams!" Proud BSS Parent

"Wow! I was truly in awe seeing our kids interacting with such confidence and enthusiasm. This Technology class has been differently a wonderful building block for our future leaders. Mrs. Foxwell you certainly have a brilliant way of teaching. Thank you!" Proud Parent of BSS

"All the kids did a great job at presenting their businesses and they really enjoyed the learning experience, which will follow them the rest of their live." Proud BSS Parent

"I thought the event really showed the students how much work, planning and detail goes into creating a business.  It was good for my daughter to recognize this reality going forward, as it will help her determine whether she should work for someone else or start a business of her own. Thanks for your hard work in organizing such a project for the students.  The event went well beyond typical classroom learning, and is the kind of teaching methodology that we need to have more of in our public school." Proud BSS Parent

"I see such progress in children being prepared to promote their business.  Each child had a poster, a place to speak and business cards.  The business “give-a-ways” were so well done.  I felt that it was at a real business convention/exposition.  Well done!  The children demonstrated they had learned some very valuable life skills for their future.  Thank you." Proud BSS Parent

"The students were courteous, professional and knowledgeable.  Their business plans showed tremendous forethought.  I look forward to walking in to one of their businesses 15 years from now!" Sam Golder / Director of Secondary School for Red Clay Consolidated Schools

"I was so proud to see the hard work she and the other kids put into it.  I am happy to see Julia learning skills that will benefit her, not just in class, but also for the rest of her life.  I wanted to commend you again on such an amazing curriculum.  I have several friends who are teachers and I have the utmost respect for what you do, and I don’t think you all hear enough what an important job you do and how grateful we as parents are for it.  I just wanted to get in touch with you again to let you know how impressed I am with the work you are doing." Proud BSS Parent

My son has had Mrs. Foxwell for business technology in both seventh and eighth grade.  His experience as a student and my experience as a parent have been nothing but positive. Mrs. Foxwell is energetic and engaging when introducing concepts and explaining ideas; her daily activities encourage students to apply their knowledge and make connections among ideas; and finally, Mrs. Foxwell’s projects take learning to the ultimate level, forcing students to evaluate their knowledge and create top notch projects and assignments. From the business technology perspective, my son is adequately prepared for high school thanks to such an amazing, dedicated, enthusiastic teacher. Proud BSS Parent

Mrs. Foxwell has brought real world experiences directly to our children. My daughter is a more confident public speaker, prepared for interviews, and has an understanding of a day to day business such as; balancing a check book and creating and maintaining a budget for both personal and business expenses.  I wish I had the same opportunities my daughter has had by being a student of Eva Foxwell and Business Technology at Brandywine Springs School. Proud BSS Parent

I just wanted to take a moment to praise the Business Technology Program at Brandywine Springs School and its teacher Eva Foxwell.  The students are extremely lucky to have such an experienced instructor who teaches them many beneficial things that will help with all of their future endeavors. In eighth grade they researched prospective high schools and even had a mock interview!  My daughter was confident and well prepared for her high school interviews thanks to Mrs. Foxwell.  We are all very lucky to have her! Proud BSS Parent

Business Technology is one of the few classes the kids take that offers “real world” experience—resumes, interviews, cover letters, etc.  I have had two children go through Ms. Foxwell’s curriculum, and it has been very clear to me how much she cares about her students.  When my kids tried to coast in her class, she was willing to focus on them individually, and she challenged them to excel and succeed.  It was very evident that she cares about her students as individuals and really wants them to succeed, not just in her class, but in life.
