Description

This resource is focused on written communication, specifically on creating a vital business document: The Business Plan Executive Summary. Teaching business genres comes with providing many examples of good and bad versions. Exposing students to real business writing, and modeling good business communication.

In Unit B of the Teaching Entrepreneurship curriculum guide students will imagine, conceive, map out, and design their own unique business, that they will build from the ground up. They will work incrementally to build a formal Business Plan, which will include several components the class will work on together. The component for this lesson is researching and writing an Executive Summary.

Students will research and create their own Executive Summary by using the below information:

  • Who you are, your background, and what makes you unique
  • Your personal reasons for starting this business
  • Why you’re passionate about this industry
  • Your past experiences, skills, or expertise
  • Any personal connections to the industry or your future business’ location
  • What NEED you are trying to meet
  • Your business’ purpose

They will insert Executive Summary Keywords:

  • Go back and re-work the following words into your Executive Summary draft:
  • Growth Potential Future Sustainability
  • Concept Priorities Opportunities Role Models

WORKSHEET - Making Realistic Business Promises

Students must revise the list below of too-big promises to sound more realistic and attainable. Big dreams are good. False promises are bad.

1. My coffee shop will sell out of every product every day.

2. My athletic gear store will make more money than Adidas within 2 years.

3. My pet grooming business will make your dog happier than before.

4. My bookstore will make you smarter.

5. In three years, I will turn around and sell my business for $1 million profit.

6. My employees will all get rich working for me.

7. My cakes will get famous and I will be invited to host Cake Wars.

Executive Summary Peer Review

1. Read your partner’s executive summary draft.

2. Stand and describe to the class what your partner’s business will be, and why it will

succeed.

If your partner can’t figure out this information from reading your executive summary,

then something is missing.
