    RATIONALE:

Sentence fragments, run-ons, and comma splices are the grammar errors that have the most significant impact on the quality of student writing. Not to imply that there aren’t other serious issues with student writing, but this is one, that if taught ahead, will dramatically improve student writing and by extension, your grading experience will be much smoother. Therefore, I like to start my writing lessons off with a thorough workshop on these common errors.

Secondly, teaching RACE+T (transitions) strategy is an efficient way to ensure students understand the elements of a paragraph, how to supply evidence and elaboration, and how to address a prompt. This lesson is a microcosm of a larger essay and will allow you to help mold your students’ writing skills on a small, manageable scale before tackling full essays.

Lastly, I design my lesson sequences with interwoven reviews from previous units, current content, and introductions to future lessons. Unlike with a strict linear sequence, students will be less likely to forget what they learned in previous units.
