Description

RACE is a strategy used to help students organize their thinking when writing a text dependent, open response answer. I have used this strategy in my class for over three years in grades second through fourth and saw a lot of improvement in my students’ mastery of writing open response answers. Their answers went from short, incorrectly citing evidence, beginning with “because” to full answers with evidence, explanations and transition words.

RACE is a writing acronym used to help students write open response questions:

R-Restate question
A- Answer question
C- Cite evidence
E- Explain answer and how evidence supports your answer

This Graphic Organizer Packet includes:
• 4 RACE writing maps in black and white copies (3 additional copies in color)
• Sample completed graphic organizer using the book: Officer Buckle and Gloria
• Sample writing response using the book: Officer Buckle and Gloria

Background Story:
Last year while teaching third grade, my students needed help writing answers to open response questions. To aid them, I created a graphic organizer. After being observed by one of our district administrators, I was offered the opportunity to present the map in a lesson for principals and administrators throughout the district. Two days later, I did a model lesson for 21 administrators in my classroom to show them how to incorporate writing graphic organizers to respond to questions.

Currently, my writing flow map is used throughout the district. I created three more maps to differentiate based on the needs of your students. If you purchase this packet today, it will also help your students with citing evidence, elaborating and writing a full answer. But wait that’s not it folks, if you want to save money, you can purchase the RACE unit with all the items including graphic organizers, charts, bookmarks, and rubric!

Officer Buckle and Gloria is a great book to read in the beginning of the school year. In the book Officer Buckle and Gloria visits schools and makes a presentation about safety rules. I use this book to introduce rules in the classroom. This can also be used throughout the school to review safety in the school
