Students often struggle to punctuate direct speech. This PowerPoint explains the components of direct speech (speaker tags and spoken words) and how to punctuate sentences depending on the position of the speaker tag.
Students work through the interactive slides with their whiteboards to learn about the correct use of quotation marks and commas in dialogue. It's easy to use; just click and teach.

- Explanation of direct speech with examples.
- Explanation and examples of speaker tags (position and how to punctuate).
- Activity 1: Students identify the correct use of quotation marks and commas (choose the correct sentence).
- Activity 2: Students punctuate sentences using quotation marks and commas.
- Activity 3: Students answer questions using quotation marks and commas.
- Activity 4: Independent work – punctuate direct speech by adding quotation marks and commas (you can always use activity 4 later in the week for assessment or later in the year for test prep.).
Students are encouraged to use their whiteboards throughout the presentation.
