What educators are saying
Description
The Pythagorean Theorem is used in this set of 12 task cards that has students finding the distances between zoo animals that have been placed at points on a coordinate plane. The activity can be completed independently or with a partner/small group. It would be great to use as stations or a carousel activity where students can work at their own pace. There are also two challenge cards that can be used for enrichment or as a follow up after having completed the other task cards. You could print out the map and/or task cards in color and laminate for years of use.
The following types of problems are included:
-Using two coordinates, find the distance between two points.
-Using a coordinate plane, find the total distance between three points that form a right triangle.
-Using a coordinate plane, find the total distance between three points that do not form a right triangle.
CCSS 8.G.B.8: Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system.
This activity meets or exceeds the 8th grade common core standard 8.G.B.8, but may also be used in any grade that students are taught or have previously learned the Pythagorean Theorem.
