✏️ Teacher Instructions for using this resource

How to use these Embedding Quotations Grammar Worksheets:

You can begin this lesson with the Punctuating Dialogue Slideshow Lesson. This lesson is formatted for Microsoft PowerPoint® and Google Slides®. Students will learn about the general rules of punctuating dialogue and will evaluate examples of embedding quotations to determine whether or not they are grammatically correct. Students will also learn about direct tags and how they provide more information about the speaker and their tone, expression, and emotion.

You can then distribute the Punctuating Dialogue Informational Handouts. These handouts introduce the purpose of dialogue in narrative writing, along with explanations for the required grammar and mechanics for embedding quotations in paragraph form. To illustrate this, these handouts also include detailed visual examples.

You can practice the skills covered in the informational handouts using the Punctuating Dialogue Practice Activity.  This activity includes 20 creative writing prompts that can be used to assess students’ understanding of punctuating dialogue. You can have students pick a writing prompt and practice on a blank piece of paper or blank Google Doc®.  I like to have students volunteer to share their creative pieces or have them trade with a partner to provide feedback.

Students can then practice the grammar and mechanics of embedding quotations using the Grammar Worksheets.  These worksheets include 3 days worth of scaffolding and practice.  They can be distributed day-by-day or all at once as a practice workbook.

To consolidate these grammar worksheets, an answer key has also been provided.

A fun way to continue practicing embedding quotations with your students is to use the Interactive Creative Writing Game.  This activity divides the 20 creative writing prompts provided into separate worksheets.  To play, you can distribute one worksheet to each student in your class.  Students will integrate the dialogue provided by embedding it in a narrative paragraph. They will then pass this worksheet to a classmate and have them continue the dialogue while they do the same for a classmate that passes them a different prompt.  Students will have fun developing stories while modeling the proper use of quotation marks for their peers.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extremely satisfied

Really wonderful resource for dialogue. My students often struggle with writing dialogue, but also identifying the difference between quotes and dialogue when writing. This activity fixed that issue for me. Punctuation is always hard to teach when it comes to dialogue, but this made it quick and easy.
