What’s included in this pumpkin unit?

This “All About Pumpkins” thematic unit includes materials to help you integrate learning about pumpkins into science, literacy, and math in your primary classroom.

Here’s what’s included:

Informational PowerPoint Slideshow “All About Pumpkins”

This slideshow is packed full of information about pumpkins. Packed with clear photographs, this presentation includes nonfiction text about the life cycle of pumpkins, the parts of a pumpkin, products made from pumpkins, and other fun and interesting pumpkin facts. This PowerPoint slideshow is 15 slides long and is copied at the end of the PDF in addition to the PPT file (for those without access to PowerPoint).

Informational Video

The pumpkin slideshow is also included in the form of a narrated video. The video is stored in Dropbox and a link is included in the download PDF.

Pumpkins Vocabulary Word Posters and Word Wall Cards

The included pumpkin vocabulary word posters, each with a photo and a simple definition are: pollination, pumpkin patch, harvest, hayride, vine, and jack o’ lantern. The word wall cards, each with a photograph, are: pumpkin, stem, seedling, blossom, vine, leaves, seeds, pulp, rind, flesh, tendril, and pie.

Anchor Chart Materials and Posters

Printable materials are included to help you create meaningful pumpkin anchor charts with your students. You’ll find what you need to make a KWL chart, a “Can, Have, Are” chart, and an “Inside/Outside” comparison chart. In addition, this set includes a “Parts of a Pumpkin” poster, a “Pumpkin Life Cycle” poster, and a short, illustrated life cycle poem to display.

Printable Pumpkin Activities

Themed Informational Writing Materials: In addition to writing organizers, this set includes various pumpkin-themed lined writing sheets and book templates.

Cut and Fold Pumpkin Book: This informational easy reader is designed to be printed double-sided, using only one sheet of paper. Students can color the pictures, then practice reading and print concepts. This book has one simple sentence per page.

Pumpkin Science Activities: Students can complete a cut-and-glue labeling page and one of two cut-and-glue life cycle pages. This section also includes life cycle writing and drawing templates and a "Pumpkin Treats" handwriting page.

Pumpkin Craft and Life Cycle Crown: Materials are included for students to make a pumpkin life cycle wheel craft as well as a life cycle crown. Versions of the crown are included with a plain pumpkin and with a jack-o’-lantern. Just add a sentence strip!

Pumpkin Literacy Activities: With varied difficulty, these printable pages allow students to practice rhyming, correcting sentences, ending punctuation, and using the words “big” and “little” to label pumpkins.

Pumpkin Math Activities: These thematic math practice pages include a color-by-number picture, counting pages, simple addition, and a set of pumpkin-themed playing cards for math games.

How do I use this All About Pumpkins unit?

Begin by accessing students’ background knowledge about pumpkins by having a class discussion. As you discuss, fill in the “K” (What I Know) and “W” (What I Want to Know) columns of the KWL chart. Follow up with the PowerPoint slideshow, which can be read aloud in one sitting or can be used across several days. Young children will need time to discuss the information as it is presented, so be sure to build in time for conversations and questions! Upon completion of the PowerPoint (or as you go along), have students help fill in the final column of the KWL chart.

To guide students toward informational writing about pumpkins, begin with the “Can, Have, Are” chart, having the students help determine what you should write in each section (a sample chart is included). Students can then begin to work on their own organizers which will scaffold them toward writing three informational sentences about pumpkins.

The Pumpkins Outside & Inside chart and writing pages can be used along with a pumpkin exploration project. Bring in a pumpkin and give students a chance to touch it and list words that describe the way it looks and feels. Then cut the pumpkin open and allow students to look at, touch, and smell the inside before listing words that describe that sensory experience.

If you plan to carve a jack o’ lantern with your class, this project can be combined with that one.

The other activities can be completed in any order (and you can pick and choose based on the needs and levels of your students.
