Description
Slide show in PDF format for a quick overview of Puerto Rico's history and culture. Slide show in PDF format focuses mostly on the Taíno history in order to help students comprehend why many people say they are Boricuas instead of Puerto Ricans.
Included also is a fragment of an article in Spanish with reading comprehension questions and a matching activity for students to work on right after the slideshow presentation. The fragment of article and questions can be used the following day or assigned for HW.
Slide show in PDF format is in Spanish. Suggested activity to accompany this slide show would be a KWL chart. Have students fill out prior to slide show what they already know about Puerto Rico. After viewing the slide show they can fill in what they learned from the ppt. They can also fill in afterwards what else would they like to know which can lead into a Web Quest for the following lesson.
I like to play the sound of "El Coquí" while students view the slide show and take notes:

After viewing the slide show and note taking, I have students write a paragraph in Spanish to summarize what they learned. Great way to practice writing and digest what was just learned. Also keeps students on task because they know they will have to apply the information later in class. I like to collect their writing to make them accountable and also keep them in a writing folder so that I can see their progress and also show parents at conferences. Parents are always impress with their child's writing folder.
ALL items are in PDF format.
