What educators are saying

This resource looks terrific and I plan on using it either late in the school year or next year. I just ran out of time before Thanksgiving break. It has everything you need and the students would definitely be engaged in it. I am planning on using it in Sociology.

Description

Are you anal retentive? How about orally fixated? This is a really fun student-centered way to engage your high school or college students in Sigmund Freud's theory of personality development. They take the simple questionnaire then calculate their own "scores" for their potential oral stage fixations and their potential anal stage fixations. Students always read the explanatory handout with great interest (since it may be revealing psychological secrets about themselves)--and in the process learn the details of Freud's famous theory. Includes a detailed page explaining the theory and the students' scores. Also includes a free-response assignment to accompany the activity as follow up. You can discuss the students' responses in class as closure.

This is a complete 1-period activity revolving around a questionnaire based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of the stages of personality development, focusing on the first 2 stages, the oral stage (infancy) and the anal stage (toddlerhood). It works as a great introduction to the subject of Freudian psychoanalysis (especially as it concerns personality development from the early years of childhood). It is appropriate for units on the history of psychology, personality, psychoanalysis (one of the earliest approaches to psychiatry) and child development. But it also may be used independently, just as a fun way to expose your students to the concepts of anal retentiveness and oral fixation, without connection to any larger unit or going any deeper into the topic of psychoanalysis.
