Description
Psychology: Foundations: Research Methods
Hand In Hand's Psychology Research Methods Lessons and Homework packet includes 3 activities that can be used as in-class small group assignments or as homework.
→ 1 - Identifying Research Methods
After students have learned about different types of psychological research methods, they have the opportunity to apply that knowledge with this 2-page worksheet. Six (6) research designs are presented. Students must identify if they use a case study, experiment, longitudinal study, naturalistic observation, survey, or twin study research method. They also identify the independent and dependent variable in each design case.
Build critical thinking skills by extending this activity and challenging students to identify confounding variables that may affect each research scenario.
→ 2 - Selecting a Research Method
Students are presented with 8 separate hypotheses and 3 possible research methods that could be used to test the hypothesis. Students must select the best research method to match the hypothesis. Additionally, students must write a short explanation as to why the other options may not be effective methods to use for that particular research question.
→ 3 - Writing a Hypothesis
Students read over 3 different research ideas. For each prompt they must identify the independent and dependent variables before writing a testable hypothesis. Extend this activity by challenging students to identify factors that would need to be controlled in an actual study.
Answers are included for each worksheet, as well as the extension ideas.
